Name Change (or rather, name rearrangement)
I've changed the name of the game! It's not because of any pressure from corporate influences or any weird legal reasons, but rather I want to make sure I'm properly conveying what this is.
When this all started, I was just calling the game Simon Quest. I still call it Simon Quest when casually talking about it, but- I wanted to break down my thought process behind the game's name and each iteration.
When I was calling the game Simon Quest, there was a lot of confusion from people thinking this game is a remake of Castlevania 2, or that it's even related to it at all. It wasn't apparent that Simon Quest was the name of this game's protagonist, and it's meant to be a parody. To help mitigate that, I changed the name to "Simon Quest: Transylvania Adventure"... That was DUMB, because it didn't help the original problem- just added more words.
Shortly after, I added an apostrophe, changing the name to "Simon Quest's Transylvania Adventure"- this actually helped a bit, and it's the name I've gone with until this point- but, there's still some confusion. The problem is, I felt like this combination of words does exactly what it needs to do- Simon Quest being the hero's name sets the tone- it's a parody. Transylvania Adventure lets you know it's an adventure game set in Transylvania. It lends itself to the game. Much to my dismay, I still get the occasional "you're calling this Simon's Quest?" (the Diddy's Kong Quest problem).
How do I fix this without losing what the old title sets out to do? Well- De-emphasize Simon's name. I rearranged the words a bit in a way that makes sense and makes it clear that Simon Quest is the hero's name.
Going forward, the name of the game is "The Transylvania Adventure", with the subtitle of "of Simon Quest". I'll still continue to refer to it as SQTA casually, but the official title of the game is the above.
I've always said from the very beginning that the name of the game is the most malleable thing. The moment it became apparent that the title itself is confusing people as a result of the game's joke was the moment I start to become conflicted. It's not my intention to confuse people- I want to be very clear what this game is- and even if the confusion is an unintentional byproduct, it needs to change.
Anyway- thank you everybody for your support over the past year and a half! I post a lot of updates on Twitter regarding the game- videos of gameplay, improvements, and some general commentary on development. Feel free to follow!
